1) THE PARANOID HUSBAND (?)

When I was 15 years old, bentinho fell in love with the neighbor Capitu. But his mother, Dona Glória, had promised that he would become a priest. The young man dropped out of seminary after two years, trained as a lawyer and married his beloved. Over time, jealousy corroded the relationship and Bentinho ended up alone in his mansion. Hence the name of the book: “casmurro” means reserved, self-absorbed, bitter. (A very popular theory says that, in fact, Bentinho was in love with Escobar. As a narrator, he uses Capitu’s fixation to throw the reader off track)

2) HOME, SWEET HOME (?)

Bentinho rebuilt, in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Engenho Novo, the House where he had spent his childhood, on Rua de Matacavalos (RJ), in Lapa. It had “three windows at the front, a veranda at the back, the same alcoves and rooms” and an exquisite painting in the main room. There was still room for flowers, a vegetable patch, a well and a casuarina tree.

3) THE COUNSELOR (?)

At the time when Bentinho’s family lived on the Itaguaí farm, Jose Dias He cured a sick overseer and a female slave with homeopathy. He did not want to receive money, but accepted the proposal to live there. He stayed with the family when they moved to Rio. It was he who defined Capitu’s slanted eyes as that of a gypsy and disguised

4 THE FRIEND OF THE OZA (?)

escobar met Bentinho at the seminary and saved him from his fate: it was he who suggested to Dona Glória that she fulfill her “debt” to God by transforming an orphan into a priest. In adult life, he became a businessman and married Capitu’s best friend, Sancha. The couples lived together until the tragic death of Escobar, who drowned in the sea.

5) THE BASTARD SON (?)

Son of Capitu and Bentinho, Ezequiel he received the baptismal name of Escobar and everyone said that the boy also had the eyes and demeanor of a merchant. Upon noticing such similarities, Bentinho took a dislike to the boy, exiling him in Europe. When the boy returned, he just received more money to travel again. He died of typhoid fever and was buried near Jerusalem

6) THE UNFAITHFUL WIFE (?)

After marrying Bentinho, captain took a while to get pregnant. To make matters worse, Sancha and Escobar, the couple’s best friends, already had a girl. Ezequiel’s arrival, however, distanced Capitu from her husband. As the boy grew, suspicions grew that he was Escobar’s son. Bentinho ended up sending mother and son to Europe

CHEATED OR NOT?

The arguments of each side in the biggest debate in national literature

Yes

– Capitu was dissimulated in several situations, such as when she invented a lie to her parents to cover up that she had kissed Bentinho

Continues after advertising

– Ezequiel was similar to Escobar – physically, according to Bentinho, and even in personality, according to other characters

– It wouldn’t be Escobar’s first betrayal. There were rumors that he had already cheated on Sancha with an actress or dancer.

No

– The resemblance of Ezequiel and Escobar matters little: Sancha’s father, for example, says that his wife and Capitu had the same eyes and personality

– Bentinho is the narrator of the story. Therefore, everything is analyzed according to its own perspective, which can be distorted

– He was a lawyer and dominated the resources of persuasion. Also, he himself admits to being jealous and having a bad memory.
