Anyone who has seen the Englishman Rowan Atkinson interpret the clumsy Mr. Bean, imagines that he had a wide training as a comedic actor. After all, he manages to convey a lot of emotions without saying practically any words! But the story of how the character came to be is quite different: when Atkinson invented him, in 1976, he had no acting experience. He was still at Oxford University majoring in… electrical engineering! His colleagues asked him to participate in an amateur theater show and Atkinson had less than 48 hours to create his skit. He went to the mirror, started playing with his face, and that’s how Mr. bean.

Mr Zucchini

Full of faces and mouths and childlike attitudes, the character rocked the show and Atkinson spent the next few years developing him. Even baptizing him took time. he wanted one Vegeta’s namehe almost got “Mr. Zucchini” (“Mister Zucchini”), “Mr. Potato” (“Mister Potato”), “Mr. Cabbage” (“Mister Cabbage”) or “Mr. Cauliflower” (“Mister Cauliflower”). According to the comedian, “Mr. bean” (“Mister Bean”) was chosen for being “short and silly”.

In 1987 came proof of the universal appeal of Mr. bean: even without knowing a word of French, Atkinson was a hit at a comedy festival in Montreal, Canada. It was a sign that his quiet humor, reminiscent of silent film stars such as Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton, it would work in any culture. Three years later, Mr. bean made it to TV, in a special on ITV. It was a success and spawned the series that became popular worldwide in 1995.

Look how shocking: the official series only had 14 half-hour episodes. It seems more, right? It’s because each chapter had several short skits, about 5 minutes long, that were shown individually here in Brazil, on Fantastic, from Rede Globo. Today, Atkinson, aged 61, has retired the character. He only made a special presentation in 2015, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his official debut on TV. Fittingly, the video was called “Mr. Bean: The Funeral”.
