How to recycle rainwater for the home

With rain, the water seeps into the ground or flows to form rivers and lakes. Since ancient times, civilizations have survived with water distribution and collection systems. In fact, many of the ancient structures used to channel the water that fell on the roofs into a large underground reservoir to be used for numerous household purposes. Among the most famous water collection systems are those used by the Mesopotamians, Greeks and Romans; and while the arabs named al-jibab to the rainwater storage tankthe Mayans used the chultuns to provide water in the dry season.

Currently, water distribution systems use significant amounts of energy, resources and infrastructure, mainly to cover the water capture needs of a building. With the passage of time, new functions and improvements to existing systems were developed; mainly in catchment areas with waterproofing with stones or ceramic tiles, water pipes that direct the collected water to the tank, filters that eliminate dust and impurities from the water, deposits or cisterns that allow the correct conservation of water and that are adequately conditioned, and control systems that allow the alternation of the use of water from the reserve and from the general network.

Why implement a water collection system (even a very basic one)? Here is a list of benefits of a rainwater recycling system:

  • allows the free self-supply of high quality water.
  • Helps reduce excess demand from public supply networks, facilitating the conservation of public reserves for cases of scarcity.
  • It represents an energy saving, by not having to use electricity to pump at least part of the water that is going to be used from the reserves to each house.
  • Facilitates the public drainage network, by not pouring into it the water that falls on the roofs.
  • It allows recovery of underground aquifers in urban areas.
  • Raises awareness and establishes a direct relationship with the environment.
  • This collected water can be used to water plants, wash the car, flush the toilet, wash hair, bathe pets, wash dishes, etc. And it is not necessary to implement very sophisticated collection methods, it is enough to put a bucket on the balcony or roof so that it is filled every time it rains or install a barrel connected to the gutters. In the barrel add a small faucet to connect the hose, and use that water to water the garden and to wash the car or the floor.
