TV series about the scientific investigation of crimes are a hit. In Brazil, this work is done by two professionals: the coroner and the criminal expert. This month, we’re talking about coroners, and in February, we’re talking about CSIs. “The difficulties are immense. It would need a structure that we don’t have. It’s not the kind of thing you see in the movies”, says coroner José Salomão Neto, from the Instituto Médico Legal (IML) Central in São Paulo. Dreaming of this profession, however, is not a crime. me

TRAINING

Undergraduate and postgraduate:

The medical examiner needs to graduate in medicine, a course that lasts six years. There are some places, such as the Oscar Freire Institute, at USP, in São Paulo, that have postgraduate courses in this specific area.

What is learned:

Forensic medicine is a discipline in the medical school. Students can even take classes at IMLs

Other courses:

After graduating in medicine, it is necessary to take a public exam to work at the IML, where there are courses that teach, for example, notions of ballistics, criminal law and how to examine corpses

WORK

Occupation area:

You can work in IMLs, as a university professor or even providing advice to law firms

Day to day:

Within the IMLs there are several departments. In forensic anthropology, for example, you exhume corpses; in the medical clinic, it performs examinations of bodily injuries and gives opinions in cases of medical errors; in addition, coroners still issue reports explaining the causes of several deaths

Market situation:

The profession has been in great demand in recent years and public tenders are well disputed.

What else is worth:

Knowing that your work can give important clues to solve crimes; job stability when passing a public IML tender

Why think twice:

The responsibility is great. A wrong report can accuse an innocent person. The lack of a good working structure in the IMLs means that only repercussion crimes receive the necessary attention
