How much food does an adult person eat in a year?

Approximately 1 ton, or almost 3 kilos per day – including solid and liquid food. To “weigh” all this food, we had the help of nutritionist Daniela Silveira, from Unifesp. Caloric needs vary according to each person’s sex, weight, height, age and physical activity. But, according to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States, an adult male needs to chest 2,900 calories a day (more than 1 million a year). From there, we put together a balanced menu – 56% carbohydrates, 16% proteins and 28% fat – and very Brazilian, with rice, beans and even that basic coffee. After adding up the weight of all the ingredients used to prepare the daily meals, it was just a matter of multiplying the recipe by the 365 days of the year and tasting the result. “But of course this varies a lot, because each person has their own diet and nobody eats the same thing every day”, recalls the nutritionist.
