How fast do nails grow?

Fingernails grow about 3 mm per month and toenails grow more slowly, at a rate that varies from 1 to 1.5 mm per month.

It is still not known why, but researchers have already observed that the growth rate is greater during the day, in childhood, among men, in obese people and in warmer seasons, such as summer – the speculation is that nails grow more faster the greater the blood circulation.

The human being with the longest fingernails on his hands is the North American Melvin Boothe. In 2009, the Guinness measured its ten nails, which added up to 9.85 m. Considering only one hand, the record holder is the Indian Shridhar Chillal, who had 7.05 m of fingernails on his left hand.

  • Thumb nails tend to grow faster than other nails.
