How does ASCII code work on laptops?

Response from ALEGSA.com.ar:

You probably have a laptop with a small keyboard that does NOT have the numeric keypad on the right, which is used in conjunction with ASCII code to produce characters.

To solve this problem, laptop keyboards usually have a key called Fn (Function or Function). If you look closely, as you can see in the image below, there are numbers embedded in the letter keys on your keyboard, it’s the «alternative keyboard»:

If you press the Fn key (also indicated in the image) together with a number from the light blue ones (from the alternative keyboard), that number will be written. Those are the numbers you’ll need to use to access the ASCII code.

For example,:
Press and hold «Alt» key, without releasing «Fn» key and thus write «165» (on the alternative keyboard). The letter eñe (ñ) will appear.

If you find it annoying to also press the «Fn» key, some notebooks have the option to «lock» the «Fn» key, this means that you can use the «alternate» keyboard without having to hold down the Fn key. Then, to go back to the normal keyboard, you have to take out the Fn lock. To do this you should refer to your computer’s manual.
