A fever is always a sign that something is wrong with your health: whether it’s an infection, inflammation, or a nervous system injury. In these cases, the human body begins to produce a greater amount of the enzyme prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase. In excess, this substance ends up unbalancing the functioning of the hypothalamus, the brain region responsible for controlling body temperature. Thus, the organism begins to produce more heat than it can lose: it is the fever. Not only is it not harmful, it has its reason for being. Small rises in body temperature increase metabolism, helping to fight infections. To antipyretics, therefore: some types of these remedies act at the beginning of the process, inhibiting the production of prostaglandin, while others act directly on the hypothalamus, preventing it from being influenced.

«It is important to remember that these drugs only prevent the body temperature from rising, but do not cure the disorder that would be causing this rise», says pediatrician Fernando Fernandes.
