How did the expression honeymoon come about?

It is a literal translation of the English honeymoon. In Ireland, newlyweds had the custom of having a low-alcohol drink called mead – or mead -, basically composed of fermented honey and water. The potion was supposed to be consumed within a month or a moon. Mead was once a very popular and widespread drink throughout the world, appreciated both by the ancient Romans (it was another of the sacred drinks of Bacchus, the god of wine) and by aborigines, Africans and pre-Columbian societies – in addition to being mentioned in the Bible. Honey was considered, by ancient traditions, a source of life, with aphrodisiac properties – which must have contributed to this Irish ritual use.
