What is mocha coffee?
It’s a sweet, chocolaty coffee and takes hardly any more time to brew than adding cream and sugar to your morning coffee, so it can be the combo treat that helps you start your day with a delicious boost.
What is this coffee called… Mocha, Mocha or Moka?
The answer comes precisely from its origin, and it can be in all three ways.
mocha, is a word of Arabic origin. In fact, it is the name of an important port city in Yemen, which was the heart of the world coffee trade between the 15th and 18th centuries.
Arabica coffee is originally from Yemen, but is not actually grown in Mocha. However, the grains became known as mocha grains and are said to have a distinctive chocolate-like flavor. Still that name is popular to this day.
Preparation of homemade mocha coffee
Ingredients
Homemade chocolate syrup: Instead of using store-bought chocolate syrup or hot chocolate mix like many recipes do, you’ll make a quick syrup of cocoa powder, sugar, and water to flavor the mocha base.
Coffee: true mocha lattes are made with espresso, but we’ll stick to regular coffee for this homemade version, since that’s what most people have available. Use whatever coffee you have on hand, decaf works well.
Milk: By default, coffee shops typically use 2% milk in coffee drinks, but you can use any milk you like, including non-dairy milks. The more fat your milk has, the richer and creamier your drink will be.
Thick cream: The cream is optional, but a little touch adds a really delicious richness to the coffee.
Preparation of an exquisite homemade mocha
In a small saucepan or microwavable mug, mix sugar, cocoa powder, and water. Heat on the stove or in the microwave and stir until the sauce is completely smooth.
Add the coffee and milk and continue heating until steaming. If you make it on the stove, you can whisk the mixture vigorously until foamy. Pour into a mug, top with whipped cream if desired, and enjoy!
homemade shake method
Combine all ingredients in a mason jar. Screw the cap on securely and wrap a towel around it (in case the jar leaks). Shake vigorously, until everything is well mixed and the milk is foamy. Pour into a mug and microwave for 30 seconds or until steaming.
Mocha Variations
Mint Mocha: Crush a full size candy cane in a plastic bag and add to the sugar/cocoa powder/water mixture and stir until completely dissolved.
Mocha Caramel: Add a heaping tablespoon of caramel when you add the coffee and milk. You can also use dulce de leche for a sweet mocha milk
