The study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and compare its effects with two percent minoxidil.
AGA patients were randomly assigned to rosemary oil or 2 percent minoxidil over a six-month period.
«No significant changes were observed in the mean hair count at the end of three months, neither in the rosemary group nor in the minoxidil group,» the study noted.
«In contrast, both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count at the six-month endpoint compared to the baseline and three-month endpoint.»
The findings of this trial provided evidence with respect to the efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of alopecia.
Another animal study explored the application of rosemary leaf extract to enhance hair growth.
It was found that the extract promoted hair growth in mice whose backs were shaved.
The researchers suggested that the extract inhibits the «binding of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to androgen receptors».
A significant discovery since androgen receptors are the proteins that allow hormones such as testosterone and DHT to bind to them, thus causing hair loss.
Rosemary leaf extract was considered a «promising crude drug» for hair growth, the researchers conclude.
How to make rosemary oil at home
Take two tablespoons of rosemary and mix with five tablespoons of jojoba (which can be purchased at any pharmacy, beauty supply store or online).
Jojoba oil is recommended over coconut oil as the latter is known to clog particles.
The mixture can be put in a glass with a lid and placed in boiling water, in a water bath.
This method can also be used with Grape seed oil (which you can buy in any supermarket).
