During an interview for La W, the actor who gave life to the protagonist of the successful novel by Fernando Gaitanconfessed that initially, he was not meant to personify it.

Although it is an almost impossible task to imagine another person interpreting to the president of EcomodaAbello stated that at that time, another famous actor had been chosen.
“Fernando Gaitán called me to write a novel called Till money do us part, gave me the main character (…). I studied everything and said ‘okay, let’s do it’, I loved her. And suddenly, in RCN they asked Fernando not to write Till money do us partbut a soap opera that was saved a long time ago on his desk. yesand called I am Betty the Ugly one“
Jorge Enrique recalled that, at that time, the writer contacted him to apologize for what had happened and to tell him that for this new production he already had another actor.
Fernando called me and said ‘Look, Jorge Enrique, I’m sorry, I’m not going to count on your services anymore, because I’m not going to do Until Money Do Us Part. I’m going to do a soap opera called Yo soy Betty, la fea, and I’d like Guy Ecker to do it’ (…) And I told him ‘no, because I’m not going to compete against Guy Ecker’
Apparently the one who would give life to the neurotic Armando Mendoza would be the handsome protagonist of woman-fragranced coffeeGuy Ecker. But the plans were changing along the way and, almost by accident, the Colombian was left with the role.
“John Bolívar, who was the head of casting for RCN, told me ‘Hey Jorge Enrique, I have about 12 actresses who have to be cast for the character of ‘Betty’. I need someone to help me as their ‘partner’ and I told him: ‘I’ll help you,’” he narrated. “That day I had to kiss 12 actresses and make fun of them“
The actor reported that none of the actresses convinced the producers. Nevertheless, who really surprised everyone with his performance was Jorge Enriqueso immediately they offered him the role.
“They called me from RCN and told me: ‘look, we didn’t choose any of the actresses, but we diddo you want to be ‘Don Armando?’, and I told him ‘no, I already have Lolita’s goofball’, that I love it, that it’s a cool character, that I can play (…) So They lasted about 20 days convincing me and I didn’t want to be ‘Don Armando’
Finally Abello agreed to play the role of Armando Mendoza and, after reading the script, says he was completely captivated. Despite the fact that many did not believe in having a novel «with an ugly protagonist», the production ended up being a worldwide success.
