Under the right conditions, the «colleague» dog ensures a pleasant working atmosphere, which has now also been proven by numerous studies. But not only humans enjoy the advantages of the privilege of taking their dog to the workplace. The dog also benefits from this: In contrast to the conspecifics, who have to wait hours alone in their own four walls until their human comes back, the office dog does not have to experience this separation at all. This is extremely positive for the psyche of the animal.
In principle, employers are not obliged to allow dogs in the workplace. If you want to take your dog with you, you should first get your employer’s permission – preferably in writing. It is also advisable to consult with your colleagues in advance in order to avoid conflicts.
If two or more animals are at work, it is advisable to introduce them to one another in a neutral place beforehand. This can prevent conflicts such as lack of space or territoriality.
If the dogs do not get along, the owners must ensure that the animals do not meet if possible. Room separation or alternating «shifts» – if there is only one office room – would be possible solutions here.
It makes sense to design the dog’s environment at the workplace in such a way that the dog’s basic needs are met: The dog should be given its own place (this can be a basket or a blanket), which should not be in a noisy or heavily frequented area location.
Fresh water and food should also be provided, and regular walks must also be scheduled. With particularly active and agile dogs, an extensive round should take place before the «start of work». Otherwise there is a risk that the animals will let off steam during working hours and distract the human colleagues from their work.
