The setter – a very special life partner
Bowen III
I personally got to know this wonderful dog breed at the age of 14. At that time I saw for the first time a beautiful, lovable Irish Setter dog who lived in the family of a schoolmate of mine and from then on there was no stopping me.
For two long years I pestered my parents every day about my wish for an Irish Setter until I was finally able to make this dream come true. A small Irish Setter puppy was now allowed to move in with us and what followed was a unique time for me in which I got to know this breed from the ground up and learned to love it. Since then, I can no longer imagine life without a setter by my side.
Many, many years later, including after intensively studying the five English pointer breeds with all their breed-typical fundamentals and characters, I was able to fulfill another big wish in my life and have been breeding the Gordon Setter and Irish Setter breeds since 1999, which are still my absolute favorites Favorites. Through my membership in my breeding association, I am affiliated with the FCI, the VDH and the JGHV and breed our wonderful breeds according to these guidelines.
Two super noses
Our breeds were originally used purely as pointers for game birds before being shot. Today the setter is a so-called “all-rounder”; it is often used for hunting with all the tasks that arise in this regard and is on a par with the German hunting dog breeds. However, due to the typical characteristics of his breed, a Setter offers the basis for a very wide range of tasks and can also be used perfectly as a service dog for the disabled, rescue dog, therapy dog, as well as in agility sports and of course as a fantastic family and companion dog.
A setter is a good-natured, always in a good mood and always friendly dog. Our breeds are classified as very child-friendly and have always been my own children's best friend, buddy and – I personally can really describe it this way – also «sorrow aunt». Maybe they are just more understanding listeners?
Two cuddly noses
It is often incorrectly assumed that the setter has a very high urge to move and needs hours of walks or exercise to be happy, or that he absolutely needs to hunt or be guided on hunts. This is a misconception that other dog breeds are sometimes subject to. Basically, like every dog of another breed, a setter must be responsive, he wants to complete tasks, is eager to work and, first and foremost, of course wants to please his person and be close to him.
Nowadays there is an amazing variety of employment opportunities for our four-legged friends. Dog schools In this regard, we offer, for example, comprehensive training opportunities and suggestions for working with our animals. A high proportion of appropriate specialist dog books offer every dog owner comprehensible options for sensibly keeping their four-legged friend busy with brain teasers and small search and nose games, even on days when “you really wouldn't send a dog out the door”. The type of mental activity also demands a high level of concentration from the dog, which keeps him busy. With all of these options for activity, a setter is satisfied and fulfilled, although the daily balanced walk is of course on the agenda, as with any dog of a different breed.
