Do you know what’s in Yoplait’s Yopli yogurt pot?

“Yopli, the brand of children’s yogurt, has a delicious consistency and flavor that not only will children love, but will also help them in their physical and intellectual development thanks to the fact that it is fortified.” These ideas are what make us believe that this food is the best nutritional option for our children… But what if it were not?

This product is aimed at children: its label is very colorful, with a cartoon of a child on a skateboard. Largely, there are the words that imply that it is the magic food for a better development; in small and illegible, the nutritional information of a 100 g portion (when the bottle is 150 g):

Each 150 g jar contains only 1 g of apple and 12.3 grams of added sugar, equivalent to practically 2 ½ teaspoons of sugar. That is, yogurt covers from 62 percent to 82 percent of the maximum tolerated amount of sugar for any boy or girl. Consequently, the high sugar consumption of this product is associated not only with metabolic problems (obesity) and diabetes, but also with sugar addiction.

The product has 21 ingredients in total (Pasteurized whole milk, sugar, fruit mix 2.8% (sugar and/or high fructose syrup, apple 24%), apple flavor, pectin, citric acid, potassium sorbate and/or sodium benzoate, modified starch, vitamin mix and minerals (A, B1, B2, B12, folic acid, calcium), colors (yellow 5 and yellow 6), milk solids, modified starch, high fructose syrup, pectin, sucralose, lactic cultures). Among which are artificial colors that induce behavioral changes, such as hyperactivity and attention deficit; high fructose corn syrup, the excessive consumption of which is associated with type 2 diabetes; the artificial sweetener (sucralose) that induces to accustom the palate to intensely sweet flavors, which is not recommended for boys or girls.

According to The Power of the Consumer, this product is not recommended for regular use in adults, although it can be eaten as a dessert. It is also not recommended for children, due to the high amounts of sugar, artificial colors and the presence of sucralose.
