Do animals dream?

Yes. In several studied mammals, such as rats, cats, dogs, monkeys and elephants, specialists verified the presence of REM, the stage of sleep in which dreams happen. In birds too, but, on the other hand, there is still no record that this occurs with reptiles, perhaps because they are cold-blooded animals. But what is the content of animal dreams? “It is impossible to formulate hypotheses, but we believe it is related to the memory of events experienced by the animal”, says psychobiologist Sílvia Helena Cardoso. One of the most recent discoveries was made by scientists at the Center for Memory and Learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, in the United States. By monitoring the brain activity of awake and sleeping mice, researchers saw that rodents have a sleep pattern similar to ours, with long, complex dreams and even possible nightmares!
