Dental care for dogs and cats

Just like humans, dogs and cats also need healthy teeth and gums to prevent secondary diseases. Basic care for our pets includes regular home brushing and professional vet cleaning to prevent painful dental disease, gum problems and tooth loss.

Pet-friendly toothpaste and an animal-friendly toothbrush are among the most important items for proper dental care for dogs and cats. Toothpaste for humans can kill animals! Toothpaste and toothbrushes for pets are available at all pet supply stores. The toothbrushes have softer bristles and are adapted to the size of dogs and cats. Alternative «rubber finger attachments» are also recommended.

To get your pet used to brushing its teeth, it is advisable to start by massaging your pet’s lips, teeth and gums. The animal’s lips are massaged with the fingers in slow, circular motions for up to a minute once or twice a day. Then the teeth and gums follow with the same movement. Over time, the animal gets used to the movements and the touch.

Once the pet is used to it, the pet toothpaste can be used. Dogs and cats can try some of the toothpaste first to get used to the taste.

It is advisable to put a small amount of the most tasty toothpaste on the toothbrush and let the dog or cat lick the toothbrush. As a result, the animal associates the toothbrush with something positive. As soon as he gets used to the toothpaste and the brush, the actual brushing can begin. The procedure is largely the same for dogs and cats. Teeth are brushed in small circular motions, starting on the outside of the teeth.

In the beginning, you should take a break every five to ten seconds. Once the animal has gotten used to the dental care, cleaning can be done in one session. A guide value is 30 seconds to 1 minute. Kind and reassuring words that are spoken during the treatment make the treatment even easier for the animal.

If, despite your best efforts, your dog or cat does not tolerate brushing your teeth, you should not force them to do so. Pet owners can resort to alternatives that include chewing sticks and dental gel.
