The prefix «www» that starts a URL address of a web page (or other Internet resources) indicates that the address belongs to the World Wide Web service. Sometimes URLs have a number like «www1» or «www2». That number that follows the acronym «www» indicates that the information that is being received by the browser is being received from a different web server than the one that serves the typical www addresses.
Websites, especially dynamic ones, handle a lot of traffic, for this reason they often need more than one server to deal with the many requests they receive, a single server could not handle such a multitude of requests. The numbers following «www» refer to different web servers, usually elements of a server farm, each containing the same information. Servers coordinate with each other to achieve balance.
Sometimes information on the visitor’s geographic location is used to determine the server to handle a web request.
