History and development of MSN
* The MSN dial-up service was created by Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Group; it was integrated into the Windows 95 Explorer and offered its own content such as news, weather, chats, but not free access to the WWW. It was released along with Windows 95 on August 24, 1995.
* Then came open access to the WWW through Internet Explorer, available for download or as part of the Windows 95 Plus! package.
* MSN 2.0 is released, combining Internet access with multimedia content in a new program known as MSN Program Viewer, a program that ran on top of Internet Explorer 3.0. The service was launched to the general public on December 10, 1996. The MSN 2.0 service failed because it required powerful computers, a faster Internet connection, and its software was unstable.
* In 1997 MSN 2.5 is launched, less ambitious than the previous one. Most of the content was text sites and not multimedia. The service is accessed through the MSN Quick Launch icon in the Windows notification area. The MSN Quick Launch menu was dynamically updated.
* In 1998, with the release of MSN Internet Access 2.6, MSN Program Viewer ceased to exist in favor of Internet Explorer.
* In 1999 MSN Internet Access 5.0 is released along with Internet Explorer 5.0. MSN begins to develop further in its web portal, offering MSN Messenger and MSN Hotmail, acquired in 1997 from another company.
* Along with Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.0, MSN 6.0 or MSN Explorer was released in 2001.
* It is currently the second largest dial-up internet provider in the US after AOL. About 10 million subscribers by the end of 2007. Also offers broadband service associated with companies like Verizon, Qwest and Bell Sympatico, offering the MSN 9 program. Currently renamed to Windows Live.
Development of the MSN.com portal
* From 1995 to 1999, the MSN.com domain was used to promote the MSN internet service. It only contained tutorials about the internet and the service. Microsoft’s main site was home.microsoft.com, called Microsoft Internet Start; was the default Internet Explorer home page.
* In 1998, MSN.com began to be used as an Internet portal, in direct competition with Yahoo! and Go Network. At that time it still presented the contents of MSN 2.0. MSN.com became the home page for Internet Explorer. It is also integrated with MSN Messenger and MSN Hotmail.
* In 1999 the web search engine MSN Search is added.
* In 2006 many MSN services are reorganized and changed to the name of Windows Live. MSN Messenger to Windows Live Messenger, MSN Search to Live Search, MSN Spaces to Windows Live Spaces, MSN Alerts to Windows Live Alerts, MSN Groups to Windows Live Groups, etc.
* MSN.com now focuses on news and entertainment. They only promote Windows Live services from the live.com domain.
