Definition of Mixed Peripheral (Input/Output)

A mixed peripheral is one that can perform both input and output functions. They are also called input-output devices or in English: input / output device.

Computer peripherals can be classified according to the direction of the main data flow: input, output, mixed. Some bibliographies include other categories such as storage, communication, which can be included in the «mixed» category.

In input devices the main flow of data is from the device to the computer: mouse, keyboard.

In output devices the main flow of data is from the computer to the device: printer, screen.

On the other hand, in mixed (or input-output) devices or peripherals, the main flow of data is in both directions.

Examples of mixed peripherals or input-output devices

For example, hard drives, floppy drives, magnetic tape drives, CD/DVD reader-recorders, ZIP drives, flash drives, network cards, modems, video capture/output cards, etc.

The touch screen is a device that is considered mixed, since in addition to displaying information and data (output) it can act as a data input device (replacing, for example, the functions of the mouse).

Copiers and multifunction printers also fall into this category, as both peripherals can scan, print, and copy.

In any case, depending on the bibliographies consulted, there are other classifications of peripherals, such as communication peripherals, storage peripherals, etc., and many of the mixed peripherals can fall into these classifications as well.
