In computing, drive (plural drives) is an English word that, in computing, translates to «unit.» A drive is a device that reads and/or writes data to a storage medium such as floppy disks, optical discs, etc.
They are drives:
– CD drives (or CD reader), DVDs, Blu-rays.
– Hard drives (or just hard drive).
– Floppy drives (or floppy drives).
– ZIP drives.
– USB flash drives
– Magneto-optical units, etc.
Drive should not be confused with the word driver (translated as controller), which is software that allows an operating system to control a specific device that has been connected to the computer.
The term «drive» is also common for virtual storage services, such as:
-Google Drive.
-Microsoft OneDrive.
