High demand for dog and cat meat in Vietnam
According to investigations, an estimated five million dogs and one million cats are slaughtered in Vietnam every year. A kilo of dog meat fetches between six and nine euros. Cat meat can cost up to eleven euros per kilo. The study shows that 60 percent of local people in Hanoi have eaten dog meat at least once in their lives. 44 percent of those surveyed stated that they wanted to do without dog meat in the future.
Dog and cat catchers regularly collect pets and strays in the south of the country and transport them across the country in cramped cages for more than 18 hours without water or food. In addition, animals are imported from China and Laos.
Great demand in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh
Current research shows that around three million dogs are killed and eaten in Cambodia every year. Among the animals slaughtered are strays, but also pets that were either stolen or traded for pots and pans. A live dog fetches between €1.80 and €2.70 per kilo, while a kilo of raw dog meat fetches up to €3.60.
Demand is high: in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh alone, has documented over 110 restaurants that offer dog meat. Many of the restaurants have only opened in the last two years. Although the trade is thriving, dog meat consumption is a controversial practice among local people, especially among the younger generation.
Dogs and cats tortured at Indonesian live animal markets
Dog and cat meat consumers are a minority in Indonesia. According to the report, less than seven percent of Indonesians eat this type of meat. Nevertheless, around one million dogs and hundreds of thousands of cats are killed for the meat trade every year. The meat is particularly in demand on the islands of Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. At so-called «extreme markets» in North Sulawesi, the animals are sold and burned alive in front of the market visitors.
