The Covao Dos Conchos Hole, one of the wonders of human engineering worth admiring. Although it is a man-made dam, it is surrounded by the natural beauty of forested areas and Lake Conchos, which is where it is located. The aerial view that three friends managed to make, through a drone has impressed the whole world, to the point of having been confused with a natural creation.
This drain, which is part of the Sabugueiro hydroelectric complex, located in the Sierra de la Estrella National Park, in the northern half of Portugal, was built with cement and granite in 1955. The most curious thing about all this discovery, is that in the tranquility of the lake there is this large hole, with a diameter of 4.6 meters, whose function is to collect water from the «Ribeira das naves» and transport it through a tunnel, approximately one kilometer and a half long, to the city of Lagoa Comprida.
The black hole, as it is also known, is one of the strangest phenomena found in this area, it is a valley of glacial origin covered by its waters and its magnitude can only be observed from the air. The extraordinary view has captivated thousands of people, who were unaware of its existence. Although its waters were used since the last century to produce electricity, it was not until 1912 that its construction began.
If one day you decide to walk through these beautiful natural landscapes, between Plasencia and Coimbra, rest assured that you will enjoy a great and majestic walk that will allow you to enjoy the Portuguese natural beauty, however, you will not be able to know that you have reached the hole, since that you will only observe a very serene lake and that at ground level it is imperceptible. Only with the thunderous sound of falling water, simulating that of waterfalls, is that you will be able to realize that you have reached the Covao Hole.
There are many liters of water that fall every day into the depths of the lake, which seems to swallow everything. The process is a bit complicated to observe, that is, to see the drain in action, as already explained, it is not possible to admire it from the ground, but if you could fly over this air space, it would undoubtedly be a unique experience.
It is worth noting that there are other artificial holes such as the Concho, located in California, the Monticello, which is the largest landfill in the world, since it runs through there 1370 cubic meters per second, among others.
