Chickweed what it is used for Chickweed or chickweed belongs to the Caryophyllaceae or carnation family. There are about 25 species of Stellaria. It is native to Europe and has adapted throughout the world to fertile, mineral-rich soils. It grows in humid and shady places, in gardens, near houses and on the edges of forests.
This plant is usually found under the shade of oak trees. It persists throughout the year and can germinate up to five times in one season.
Alsine is a delicate, succulent, low plant that grows from a slender root. Its stems can spread along the ground, forming dense clumps a few centimeters high.
The leaves are oval and light green in color, and at night they close to protect themselves from insects. The flowers are small and white, open in sunlight and close on cloudy days and at night.
Young plants are collected before or during flowering and throughout the year. If the stems are cut with scissors, the growth of new branches is stimulated. The freshly cut plant keeps for several days in the fridge.
The fresh plant can be eaten in a salad or very lightly steamed in a stew. The alsine has a mild flavor, so other vegetables can be added to reinforce the flavor of the stew.

chickweed properties
The entire plant is edible. The stems and leaves are used in medicinal preparations. However, phytotherapists do not agree on the medicinal potency of flaxseed.
Taken as an infusion, it acts internally, calming inflammation of the digestive and respiratory systems. It has been used to treat bronchitis, pleurisycolitis, gastritis, asthma and pharyngitis. The diuretic action of the plant helps to eliminate toxins from the body and reduces the fluid retention.
Alsine contains mucilage, saponins, silica, coumarins, flavonoids (including the glucoside rutin) and carboxylic acid. The plant is rich in minerals, such as iron and copper, and vitamins A, B, and C.
If used fresh, alsine is beneficial in the form of a poultice to improve the Muscle painrheumatic and treat boils and abscesses.
The plant can also be used to remove insect stingers and remove warts. Accelerates the healing of wounds and cuts. Its emollient qualities improve the itching and irritation of eczema and psoriasis. It can be added as an infusion to bath water to soothe irritated skin. It also relieves hemorrhoids swollen and painful.
Another species of alsine, Stellaria dichotoma, is used in Chinese medicine to stop nosebleeds, reduce heavy menses, and fever. The species Stellaria alsine is also used in Chinese medicine to treat colds, snake bites, and traumatic injuries.
Recently, it has been observed that chickweed also helps in cases of hepatitis. Chickweed activity was assessed in vitro using the human HBV-transfected liver cell line HepG2.2.15. Concentrations of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in HepG2.2.15 cell culture medium were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after chickweed treatment mean-n ( SM-n) for 6 or 9 days. HBV DNA was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction and transcription-mediated amplification. In HepG2.2.15 cells, 30 μg/ml of SM-3 effectively suppressed HBsAg and HBeAg secretion with inhibition rates of 27.92% and 25.35% after 6 days of treatment, respectively.
Consistent with the reduction in HBV antigens, SM-3 also reduced the level of HBV DNA in a dose-dependent manner. The characterization and quantification of the chemical composition of chickweed showed the presence of flavonoids C-glycosides, polysaccharides and proteins, which exhibited various antiviral activities.
In conclusion, the results demonstrate that SM-3 has potential anti-HBV activity in vitro. This is the first report demonstrating the anti-hepatitis effects of chickweed, which is currently in early development as a potential drug candidate.
