CELOPATHY: WHEN JEALOUSY IS SICK

Some people suffer from cellopathy and they do not perceive it. They manifest unhealthy jealousy, acting inappropriately towards their partner and the people around them. They feel, justifiably or not, that their relationship is threatened. Generally by third parties that belong to your environment. This type of emotion is associated with the fear of losing something that belongs to them.

In turn, somewhat different from the cellopathy there is another manifestation called jealousy. This is a disorder of pathological jealousy, which causes the person to have irrational thoughts about the partner’s infidelity. These make you experience episodes of anxiety and intense emotions such as anger, fear and guilt. In addition, he tries to control the life of his partner and can even reach verbal or physical violence.

In both cases, people consider themselves owners of their partner. Obsessing in such a way that they begin to persecute and monitor her partner, in order to catch her in the act of infidelity. People who suffer from cellopathy usually focus on insignificant facts and details. On these they are based to assure and accuse their partner of being unfaithful, and they do not leave that position, thus they are presented with all the evidence that they are not right.

It is important to note that cellopathy has three levels, the first of which is emotional. This is manifested through insecurity and/or anxiety. The second is the cognitive level. It has to do with intrusive thoughts based on infidelity. And the third, the behavioral level, in which compulsive rituals are present.

Celopathy and its possible causes

Various studies have been carried out on cellopathy and many books and articles have been written. One is the one carried out by Tom Valeo (2015), which is entitled «When a Medication Leads to Suspicions of Infidelity», in which the writer maintains that although they are not very frequent, jealousy occurs as a side effect caused by drugs given to patients to stimulate the production of dopamine.

At this point, it is worth remembering that many of the medications that contain cocaine, methamphetamine or other drugs produce a sudden increase in dopamine. This neurotransmitter generally produces an effect similar to those presented by people with cellopathy. To avoid this, doctors simply lower the dose of the drug.

On the other hand, cellopathy is present in cases of schizophrenia, neurosis, bipolar disorder and patients with damage to the right frontal lobe; being very frequent is those individuals who are alcoholics and above all, people who suffer from sexual dysfunction.

How is a jealous person?

Likewise, one of the characteristics of people who suffer from cellopathy is that they are insecure, have low self-esteem, and constantly need to feel esteemed and approved by the people around them, especially their partner; and when his level of cellopathy is high; personality and psychopathological disorders appear, showing a lot of anxiety, they even become verbally and physically aggressive, with schizoid, narcissistic or paranoid traits.

Many men and women who suffer from cellopathy go to unbelievable extremes. Such is the case of a woman, published in a British newspaper, in which she is described as «the most jealous woman in the world». Her name is Debbie Wood. According to the newspaper, she was subjecting her husband to a lie detector every time he came home. She for this reason she was diagnosed with «Othello Syndrome». A disorder caused by excessive and out of control jealousy.

The Othello Syndrome

The name of this syndrome was taken from Williams Shakespeare’s play «Othello». In which Othello murders Desdemona, in an episode of excessive and sick jealousy. He was convinced of his wife’s infidelity. Well, in these cases paranoia or a jealous delirium manifests itself, which is a basic pathological personality. These types of people are very impressionable, as happened in Shakespeare’s play. Just like it happened in Shakespeare’s drama. Othello was influenced by Iago, who assured him that Desdemona was unfaithful to him.

This is how the typical delusional jealousy builds his delirium by himself. Based on irrational information, which makes him spend time to verify what he vehemently asserts. Hence, these delusions are part of a chronic delusional disorder or paranoia. It is also observed when people begin to present dementia symptoms due to an involutional deterioration of the cerebral cortex. Just as it happens in cases of chronic alcoholism.

That is why, when we are in the presence of people affected by excessive jealousy, various types of emotional reactions can be observed. These range from a normal emotional reaction, which is transitory and does not condition the person’s life or that of others. Even the excessive emotional reaction, which generally affects love relationships and is more frequent in women with different degrees of dependency.

Likewise, we find cases in which jealousy is a distinctive personality trait. Where people become distrustful, suspicious, and manage to condition the life of the couple and even other people around them. These types of people suffer from what is called «Paranoid Personality Disorder», which makes them be calculating, cold and threatening.

Although jealousy can become normal in a relationship, it can become a pathology that requires help. These can destroy, not only the couple, but also the general well-being of those who suffer from it. That is why it is important to be aware of how these emotions are being handled, to seek help if necessary. Remember that the most important thing is to feel good and be able to be good with ourselves. To give the best of ourselves to others.
