Fashion and beauty are tied up to what society imposes for the moment. If a famous person does something, it becomes a fad, and soon turns into a viral thing all over social networks. If everyone starts following the pattern, then it becomes the new fad. If everyone says it is nice, then it becomes a fad; and if you do not follow it, then you are not fashion.
Lately, the famous “Thigh Gap” has become very fashionable. A thigh gap is nothing but a space between the inner thighs of women when standing upright with knees touching. Since 2012, this has been one of the biggest proposals in beauty canons, especially in Europe, and Latin America. It is worth mentioning that this space between the muscles is a natural condition that only a few women possess, due to their bone structure. However, fashion and ignorance, which are best allies, do not allow society to understand that.
Achieving a thigh gap has become a beauty ideal, especially among teenagers. This has become a harmful mental and physical trend for any teenager who dreams of having such a thing. Many girls have become anorexic, and bulimic, and started to suffer from self-esteem alteration. Their bones are affected, they get depressed, and even present suicidal behavior, simply because they do not look like a famous model or are not fashionable.
On the internet we can see some web sites where the user is given tips to get a “thigh gap”, where they recommend exercises, and diet in order to achieve something that can be genetically impossible. This space between the legs is not achieved through exercises or diets, because the person is simply born like this, which makes these web sites completely irresponsible for posting even videos of how to achieve it in no time.
When we compare older beauty canons with current ones, it is hard to understand how we have deteriorated the feminine silhouette over the years, influenced by the illusion that we are turning it into something beautiful, when beauty has a totally subjective nature.
In the past, women used to wear extremely tight corsets or special bras in order to get narrower waits, or a wasp waist design; but this tightness caused, in many of them, injuries on their internal organs, ie their reproductive system, and this trend was finally over.
The misconception of wanting to be thin in order to have a bigger status or become more attractive, has made millions of teenagers feel uncomfortable with what they have, and try to dangerously change their bodies, which put them in situations of risk and has caused death to many; and some have developed notable internal and external physical defects.
Fashion exists for those who suit it. Let’s not go the wrong way, we all have our own beauty canon. Be authentic, and do not follow negative beauty standards that may take you to an abyss of irreversible consequences.
