Breeding and settling time is here: please leash dogs!

March 11, 2021 – Spring is approaching and with it the breeding and settling season has begun. Hares, deer, ducks, geese, songbirds, foxes and other native wild animals give birth at this time of the year. To protect wild animals, all dog owners should put their four-legged friends on a leash between March and July where wild animals can be found.

Stray or prowling dogs can become a deadly threat to young animals. Because wild animals often stop caring for their offspring if they are drastically disturbed. Ground-breeding birds such as curlews, lapwings and other species are particularly endangered by free-roaming dogs. If a dog tracks down ground breeders, they will defend their young or flee. If the young animals stay behind, it usually means certain death for them. Every loose and poaching dog also represents immense stress and a serious danger for fawns, young rabbits and nestlings of various birds.
