Be a responsible pet owner

Being a pet owner – whether it’s a dog, cat or small animal – is a wonderful privilege. Pets bring joy and love into our lives. But at the same time, you are responsible for keeping your pet happy and healthy – and being a responsible pet owner is a lifelong commitment.

Pet ownership is a serious commitment that takes time and energy. In addition to meeting your pet’s basic needs, there are some extremely important responsible pet ownership rules that you need to know to keep your pet healthy and enjoying life.

Basic needs of pets

You are responsible for ensuring that your pet…

  • has the opportunity to act out its natural behavior
  • a healthy diet and access to fresh water
  • get a comfortable place to rest
  • regular exercise (clicker training, free run, etc.).
  • is protected from stress, illness and injury

Medical Responsibility

You are responsible for ensuring that your pet…

  • receives annual vaccinations
  • regularly treated against parasites
  • receives annual/general health checks
  • necessary care such as clipping claws, checking teeth and grooming
  • is treated by the vet when sick or injured

training and socialization

You are responsible for ensuring that your pet…

  • understands and masters the basic commands
  • is well socialized to get along well (with other pets, people, children, noises…)
  • receives behavioral training from a trained trainer if necessary
  • positive experiences through reward-based training
  • mentally stimulated through exercise and activity

Social responsibility

You are responsible for ensuring that your pet (dog or cat)…

  • chipped and the data in the microchip database is up to date
  • in public places and where required to be kept on a leash
  • leaves no piles that you don’t collect
  • does not disturb wildlife or farm animals
  • has pet insurance and is kept in accordance with the law
  • no harassment of people (cyclists, joggers, etc.)
  • is not aggressive towards other animals
