Bathing after exercising is bad for your health. Myth or Reality?

After exercising, the body reaches a temperature of approximately 39ºC. For this reason, it is not recommended to bathe immediately, since exposing the body to cold water can cause a decomposition that implies circulatory and blood pressure problems.

The time that must elapse from when we finish exercising until we can bathe depends on several factors such as the external temperature, the intensity of the sport practice and the genetic conditions of each person, for example, their sweating.

On average, it is advisable to wait 15 to 20 minutes before bathing and when doing so prefer warm water over cold to relax muscles and reduce sweating, at least at the beginning of the bath, then it can be adjusted according to personal preferences. Bathing in very cold water causes sweating to increase and the skin to cool excessively, so the body sends heat to maintain temperature and can cause circulatory discomfort.

If the external temperature is warm when exercising, it is recommended to wait until the sweating stops before going in to bathe. In colder environments, it is best to wait for a while with a new shirt so as not to suffer from cooling.

In addition to waiting a while just before bathing, it is important that after exercising the body remains hydrated and that during sports practice water is drunk every 15 minutes in small amounts to recover the fluids lost during sweating. So the body can regulate its temperature in a healthy way.
