August 8th is World Cat Day

On World Cat Day, for example, tinkerer kittens are happy about a self-made «fiddle board». «For this activity toy you only need a board on which you drape various components such as fabric threads, small bags, rings, tubes or the like. You can hide treats underneath, in between or on top. There are many creative ideas for homemade toys that encourage intelligence and keep felines occupied,” says Sarah Ross.

You can also add variety to the design of your home by placing more than one scratching post or swapping it out from time to time. «You don’t have to have a new scratching and climbing tree in every room. But it’s nice when the cat has options. You can also swap out cat furniture and toys every few weeks. That doesn’t mean that you should always buy new climbing opportunities and games, but that you rotate within the existing pool and keep a part under lock and key. So scratching posts and the like are always new and exciting,” says the expert.

Velvet paws also like to have a choice when it comes to sleeping places: «Every cat should have several lying and resting places, some of which meet their need for physical contact and warmth, others for retreat and hiding,» says Ross.

Many cats do not like to drink where they eat. But instead of just putting a drinking bowl somewhere, you can also build a small water garden. “A cat should drink at least 200 milliliters a day. You can make it particularly palatable for her by creating a place that she likes to go to. With a large bowl of water, a few stones and some planted cat grass or herbs, you can quickly build a cat-friendly fountain,” says the expert.
