Alberto Carrasquilla (minister Treasury of Colombia) presented his letter of resignation to President Iván Duque after the failure of the tax reform.
Our country is going through very complicated times, because the tax reform project was added to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic (whose third wave is hitting thousands of people throughout the national territory). This proposal was the straw that broke the camel’s back for a citizenry that took to the streets to protest.

This Monday, May 3, 2021, Iván Duque would make a decision to define whether or not to accept the official’s resignation. Alberto Carrasquilla decided to pass his resignation after the request for withdrawal of the tax reform, also known as the Law of Sustainable Solidarity, that the president made to Congress. This occurred after four days of protests in different cities of the country and the militarization of most of them.
In addition to the head of said portfolio, Vice Minister Juan Alberto Londoño and Technical Vice Minister Juan Pablo Zárate also resigned, although he would have to assume the position of minister if his resignation is accepted. According to the economic daily BriefcaseAt this time the president is holding meetings with each of them. Iván Duque’s decision is expected to be announced at any time today.
