Acid Reflux Diet: Three Foods to Help Prevent Heartburn

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the diagnosis of repeated heartburn and acid reflux. Other symptoms may include: recurring hiccups, hoarse voice, bad breath, bloating, and nausea. The NHS stated: «Your symptoms will likely be worse after eating, lying down and bending over.» Certain foods trigger or worsen acid reflux, like coffee and chocolate, but what foods might help prevent heartburn?

According to Dr. Ekta Gupta: «Diet plays an important role in controlling acid reflux symptoms and is the first line of therapy used for people with GERD.»

These foods may include: bananas, melons, cauliflower, fennel, and walnuts.

Another way to prevent heartburn is to eat more watery foods that can dilute and weaken stomach acids.

Such foods include:

  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Lettuce
  • Watermelon
  • Broth-based soups.

And food rich in fiber they can also help prevent heartburn by making feel full longer, which means you are less likely to overeat.

Fiber-rich foods include: whole grains, such as oatmeal, couscous, and brown rice; root vegetables, such as carrots and beets; and green vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli and green beans.

Dr. Gupta mentioned that while these foods might help prevent heartburn, other foods can ease symptoms you might already be experiencing.

Those suffering from heartburn right now would benefit from drinking milk.

«Milk is often thought to relieve heartburn,» said Dr. Gupta. «But you have to keep in mind that milk comes in different varieties.»

Examples include «full-fat whole milk, low-fat, and skim milk.»

Dr. Gupta continued:

«Milk fat can aggravate acid reflux. But skim milk can act as a temporary buffer between the stomach lining and the acidic contents of the stomach [para] provide immediate relief from heartburn symptoms.

Other natural remedies, in addition to skim milk, may include ginger and apple cider vinegar.

The ginger considered «one of the best digestive aidsbecause it is natural alkaline and anti-inflammatory.

Drinking ginger tea as soon as you suspect heartburn symptoms may help.

Apple cider vinegar, on the other hand, is recommended based on anecdotal evidence.

However, it should not be consumed in its full concentration because it can irritate the esophagus.

Instead, a teaspoon mixed with warm water would be much more appropriate.

The NHS also recommends losing weight if you are currently overweight to help reduce the frequency of acid reflux.

Additionally, finding ways to relax can also prevent frequent bouts of heartburn.
