Parents let their babies sleep outside

Would you leave your baby outside in sub-zero temperatures? See why hundreds of parents have this strange custom…

Be it summer or midwinter with a freezing cold, Nordic parents have a curious custom: they leave their babies in strollers outside shops and bars while they shop, eat or dine inside. It is common to walk down the streets of countries such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden, and find a row of strollers with babies inside taking a nap, sometimes in sub-zero temperatures. It is what is known as a Nordic nap.

Here we do not get an idea of how cold it can get in those countries. Winters are very harsh, there can be days of -10 or -15 degrees, even with snow, and even so, even in the coldest months they do not abandon this custom. For them, it is part of their daily routine. And they do it convinced that it is beneficial for your babies.

Inside the strollers, babies are perfectly warm and protected from wind and rain, with his quilt and his hood closed. There they are well collected and their parents assure that they nap for longer than if they were in a closed environment. Apparently that’s the key. Although the ambient temperature is very low, it is very important that children wear warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag.

Children get sick less

Isn’t it bad for babies? Don’t they get sick? Nordic parents are clear that no. In fact, they do it to avoid diseases. Children exposed to the outdoors are thought to be at lower risk of catching common infections such as coughs and colds than if they shared a room with other babies. The culture of taking children outdoors is not new. This has been done for years as part of their daily lives. In nurseries and schools it is also common for children to carry out most of the activities outdoors and only go in at lunchtime or if it is too cold outside.

To keep them under control parents place a baby monitor with a monitor inside the stroller and usually they are always very close to the window from which they are watched. It should also be noted that kidnappings in the Nordic countries are extremely rare, if not non-existent. Nobody would think of taking a stroller with someone else’s baby, and if they did, it would only be by mistake.

They sleep longer

Marjo Tourula, a Finnish researcher specializing in children’s outdoor naps, has surveyed parents, who say:

“The babies clearly slept more outside than inside. If indoor naps lasted between one and two hours, outside they lasted between an hour and a half and three. Probably the restriction of movement caused by the clothing could increase the duration of the nap, while a cold environment makes it possible to wrap him without overheating, ”she notes.
