History of the jean: Why are blue jeans blue?

Ignoring the redundancy between «blue» and «blue», you will be surprised to know the true history of the jean, a basic garment in any outfit, and why this is its basic color.

Jeans can be any color: red, black, white, green… However, there is a classic color, let’s say «original», which is nothing more and nothing less than the reliable blue, but why? Why are the original blue jeans blue (forgive the redundancy)?

There are a couple of things you should know first: first, that jean blue is one of the oldest natural dyes and extended throughout the world, colloquially called indigo, which is extracted from different varieties of the plant of the indigofera genus; second, that the inventor of this type of pants is none other than Levi Strauss himself, yes ma’am, the same as jeans.

So why are jeans blue? A brief history of jeans

Dress historians agree on one reason why jeans are blue and not another color. this kind of pants were created in 1850 as work clothes for gold prospectors in California (hence their resistance).

Although the fabric had already existed for years (there are records dating back to 17th century Italy), the pants we know today arose when Strauss’s partner, the tailor Jacob Davis, proposed that he put copper rivets at points like pocket ends or fly base.

Then, when they became work clothes, they had to be blue since that was the color intended for the working class during the mid-19th century. Now, every time you feel undressed when you go to the office in jeans, think that, on the contrary, you are in work clothes!
