Emjoy, the globally successful app that encourages women to enjoy their sexuality – Online Psychologists

Throughout history, it seems that pleasure was an exclusively masculine term. Sex was a source of enjoyment for men and an obligation for women, who had to please them and bring offspring into the world. In 2019, Andrea Oliver decided to change the way women live their sexuality and, together with David Tramas, created Emjoy, an application aimed at promoting women's sexual well-being through podcasts.

Andrea Oliver studied Business Administration and Management and, while working for a venture capital firm, began researching female sexuality. After reading numerous scientific articles that claimed there was a gap between sexual pleasure experienced by men and womenOliver realized that there were no digital alternatives yet aimed at making pleasure equal. “When I was younger I was quite disconnected from my own sexual desires,” she explains in an article on WeAreTechWoman. “Emjoy was developed with the aim of boosting women's confidence through sexual disclosure that would allow them to understand their needs and desires.»

Emjoy's journey

Andrea Oliver was sure that her project could be successful, because she knew that the female technology sector, or Femtech, was boomingAlthough Emjoy managed to raise one million euros in its first round of investment, not everyone was able to see the potential of an app made by and for women.

«To our surprise, we realized that Emjoy was disliked by some investors, who either understood the problem or considered us “pornographic.” This is not surprising, considering that it is still difficult to imagine pleasure and sex, historically taboo subjects for women, from a female perspective.

In an age where female nature is banished from the socially acceptable framework and bloodless sanitary pads and razors without hair to remove are advertised, some men still have difficulty understanding that nature made women so similar to them that they have the same needs.

If companies do not have women capable of understanding women's needsthen women will inevitably be excluded from a market in which they represent a large part of consumers.

Entrepreneurs like Andrea Oliver have had the courage to enter a predominantly male economy and, luckily, their venture soon found its way: «We also found numerous investors who agreed with our mission of closing the pleasure gap and thus build an accessible way for women to be in touch with their intimate well-being.»

Emjoy was launched in 2020 and found in Covid-19 an unprecedented opportunity. Thanks to the pandemic, app usage increased by 160% and has now raised over $4 million.

Its success has been such that the magazine Forbes has included Andrea Oliver in the list “30under30: Europe”developed with the aim of promoting the talent of young entrepreneurs.
