The veronica is a perennial herbaceous plant that is 30 to 50 cm tall in the woods or their edges and in the moors.
It is a creeping plant; the stem is ascending only at the end. The leaves are opposite, with blades that are most often elliptical, obovate or lanceolate, and with jagged edges. The petiole is short.
Dense clusters of small flowers develop in the axil of the upper leaves. The calyx is as long as the flower stalk. The bell-shaped corolla is about 7 mm in diameter and light purplish-blue. The capsule is clipped, glandular, and about 4 mm in length.
Speedwell grows in most of Europe. It is a medicinal plant with whose dry leaves a tea is prepared that facilitates expectoration.
Plants growing in the southwestern Alps are sometimes considered as an independent species (V. allionii) as they are more or less lamella, have short stems, small leaves and capsules, and a pale blue corolla.
However, hairless plants can be found outside the Alps, with small leaves and a paler corolla than the Veronica itself.
