Pubic lice, also known as crabs, are tiny insects that are notorious for infesting the area around the genitals.
There are typically three different types of lice that are known to feed on humans which include head licebody lice and pubic lice.
Known as Phthirus pubis in scientific terms, public lice feed on human blood causing itch intense in the infected area.
Although crabs are not considered a sexually transmitted or venereal disease (STD) like trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc., these insects are usually found in public hair and are passed from one human to another through sexual contact. In very rare cases, you can also find these lice on your armpits, eyelashes, and facial hair.
All clothing, such as the infected person’s towels, blankets, clothing, or sheets, can also be a source of transmission of pubic lice to other people who wear them.
Adult crabs find themselves in the hair of the pubic area in order to lay eggs. These eggs are also known as nits, which usually hatch 7 to 10 days later and nymphs are born. As soon as the nymphs come out, they immediately start sucking the blood out of your body.
Contrary to popular belief, there’s no chance you’ll get an infestation of pubic lice from furniture or a toilet seat. This is because these lice do not drop from their host’s body while they are still alive. They are also not able to jump from one person to another, unlike the fleas.
People infected with pubic lice often experience itching in the area around their genitals or even the anus. The itching tends to start at least 5 days after the infestation. The itching becomes more intense at night. Some of the other common signs of a pubic lice infestation include the following:
swollen genitals
Lack of energy
low fever
Light blue spots around the bites
Sometimes excessive itching leads to wound formation. These wounds can even take any infection.
