Ulcers are quite common in developed countries, so that 5% to 10% of its inhabitants suffer from it at some point in their lives.
The disease usually manifests itself between the ages of 30 and 50, although in some cases it even appears during childhood.
There are different types of ulcers: gastric or peptic (affecting the lining of the stomach), duodenal (affecting the upper part of the small intestine) and esophageal ulcers (related to the Reflux).
Duodenal ulcer is more common in men, while gastric ulcer affects both sexes equally. On the other hand, it seems that some people are more predisposed than others, which seems to reveal the influence of genetic causes, although these have not yet been established.
