Constructivism: is it the ideal educational method for your child?

As we discussed in The 8 educational methods for your child that you should know, the education you choose for your little one must be in accordance with the vision you have of the world and how you understand it. One by one we will break down and deepen the methods that exist –which we talked about in that first note in a general way– to give you options for schools, costs and more precise data for each method. This week we talk about method constructivist.

What does the word constructivism mean?: It comes from the Latin struerewhich means to fix or give structure.

Created by: Jean Piaget, who ensures that learning is evolutionary and is assimilated by interpreting new information in relation to the previous knowledge that a student has in their cognitive structures.

Methodology: It draws on contributions from various fields of knowledge. It starts from different philosophical, psychological and pedagogical postulates that share the importance of the constructive mental activity of the students, that is, of the elaboration of new knowledge from previous teachings. His main idea is that human learning is built from a direct and active experience. That is why he bases his learning on the creation of projects.

Role of the teacher:

to. Facilitator, guide and dynamizer.

b. It provides tools for the student to be able to carry out procedures that allow them to solve problems, seek solutions and generate knowledge.

c. It makes student learning active, promoting constant participation.

d. Motivates the student and encourages reflection.

Student role:

to. Expands and modifies their cognitive structures.

b. Build your own knowledge schemas

c. Learn to learn.

d. Develop your critical attitude and creativity.

Assessment: the student must be able to explain the new knowledge acquired. This can be done through concept maps as a tool to establish that you have integrated the new learning. Also, the student must be able to apply the same knowledge in various situations, adapting it to the characteristics that each one has.
