Communication between people has changed a lot from the use of electronic devices. In the field of dating, digitization was immediate.
There are no general rules or fixed ideas about the use of electronics in relationships, much less, for example, about who should make the first call or send the first text, if they or them, but there are behaviors that it is better not to practice via digital.
Breaking up with someone over text is in bad taste and it goes against all the schemes of human communication (and good manners).
A breakup should always be a matter to be dealt with face to face. It’s awkward, yes, but it shows that you respect the other person and the relationship., enough to resign yourself to face it for a few minutes. It’s totally appropriate to text your friends when they cancel plans, but cancel a relationship by message, that is not valid.
«Breaking up in this way can often leave the receiving partner feeling confused, abandoned, and with a general lack of closure,» says therapist Daniel Olavarria, a clinical social worker.
The no texting heartbreak rule has two caveats. «When you decide to send that text, let the type of relationship and your security be the guide,» says Olavarria.
«If you’ve been on a date or two with someone, a text message is perfectly fineBasically, if it’s a date, you can send it. «Just make sure you’re friendly and direct,» he adds.
There are, however, exceptions to the rule. If they’ve had sex, it would be nice to offer a little more than a text message.
The second warning is of course your safety. If for any reason your partner makes you feel threatened or unsafe, a text might be the best way to let her know you’re done.
«The method of communication during a separation is secondary, the first thing is your safety, so you must choose the best option for the particular situation,» says Olavarria.
Of course, the rules in relationships are easy to break, but if you’re going to break up with someone, you have to do it in the smartest (and mature) way possible. Going head to head is always better than a text.
