A few weeks ago, we asked the community that follows us on our Facebook page about methods to overcome a moment of anxiety. Among the various responses received, the most popular was that of Renata JA Wilson, who shared by said means the effectiveness of the mantras: listen to them and repeat them until the thought that triggers anxiety disappears.
Based on this exercise, at harmonia.la we decided to take up Renata’s suggestion for the benefit of the rest of our readers. To this end, we undertook the task of gathering some mantras specially designed for tackle the dreaded anxietywhich occurs at the least expected moment and although it is temporary, at the moment of an attack it seems that time does not pass, but rather stops, threatening us with living like this forever.
However, this is not the case, and if the mantras seem to be an effective remedy, perhaps it is just because since its origin in the remote India of the Brahmans and the yogis, the mantras arose as “mind tools” of liberation (according to some, that is its etymological meaning). both in the buddhism as in the Hinduism They have a liturgical function (similar to that of prayers in Catholic ceremonies, for example), but over time they have been detached from this use to be incorporated into another, such as the one we are presenting now.
Without further ado, these are our mantra suggestions. For the rest, our comments section and our social networks (Facebook and Twitter) are still available to anyone who wants to contribute to this collective exercise.
ra ma da sa sa say so hung
This mantra is made up of the Sanskrit words for energy of the sun (ra), energy of the moon (ma), energy of the earth (da) and energy of the universe (sa); In addition, the particles «say», «so» and «hung» allude to the fact that the energy of the infinite takes shape in our person, with which it vibrates and makes us part of that same universal flow. It is considered a mantra of holistic healing.
ahai alai
This mantra translates as “invincible, indestructible” and in general it is associated not with power as we understand it in the West, but with that which emanates from within us because we are part of divinity. It is considered a mantra of mind healing.
pavan guru
«The breath is the teacher.» That so simple is what this mantra reveals. «Pavan» is the divine breath that we all exercise on a daily basis, and «guru» refers to the knowledge that transforms your mind, your emotions and your essence. In the breath is the healing you seek. This mantra is used as a source of energetic revitalization.
ang sung wahe guru
This is one of the most powerful mantras of the tradition, since its meaning alludes to “the energy of the Whole dancing in my cells and my members; my individual consciousness emerges with the Universal consciousness.” Hence it is considered a mantra with healing effects on the cells themselves.
For Spotify users, these and other mantras can be heard on this album.
Other phrases you can repeat during an anxiety attack
Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional
One of the foundations of Buddhism and of existence itself: you can’t avoid the painlive without experiencing it, but the difference lies in how we situate ourselves before it, with what attitude.
This too shall pass
everything in this life is transient, transientalthough for a moment it seems that it is not.
pain is not everything
Rumi, the Persian mystic poetwrote: “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean contained in one drop.. The idea is that even though certain emotions like pain, sadness, or anxiety seem to cover everything when they arise, we We are more than that: we are also joy and happiness, anger, we are the 20 or 30 or 40 years of life we have, we are the relationships we have made throughout our lives, and we are also the consciousness of the Universe.
This is just a moment
In the sense of the transitory, what more than time, that nothing stops it. Even when it seems that you can’t do anything against anxiety (but it only seems), time will do its thing: pass, make that moment pass.
I am not alone in this
The feeling of company is also a great defense against anxiety. Although this makes you feel isolated, the truth is that together with you, with you, there is always someone. All your life you have gone through weaving links that you can turn to in moments like this.
BONUSES
The following recording corresponds to songs from a salutation ceremony for the theravada buddhism. We include it, however, because it is also unexpectedly calming.
