Why do prisoners wear orange uniforms?

Reader question – Thais Midori,

Sao Paulo-SP

To facilitate their identification, preventing them from camouflaging themselves in environments such as forests and metropolises in case of escape. The color supposedly also spurs convicts on to carry out their daily tasks – studies suggest it is invigorating (and therefore often used on packaging and advertising for energy drinks, for example). But despite appearing a lot in movies and series, the orange jumpsuit is not a rule in the US prison system. In the state of Arizona, inmates wear a white uniform with black stripes. In New Orleans, the stripe is olive green. In São Paulo, penitentiaries dress in beige pants and a white T-shirt. In 2004, beige was replaced by yellow. The color, however, was not well received by public opinion.
