How did the custom of blowing out candles on birthday cakes come about?

It was in ancient Greece, in honor of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, revered on the sixth day of each month. According to mythology, this deity was represented by the Moon, the way in which it protected the Earth. The round cake, covered with lighted candles, symbolized the full moon. The same custom reappeared, we don’t know how, among German peasants in the 13th century, who invented the kinderfeste (children’s party). This celebration began at daybreak, when the candles were lit and the child woke up with the arrival of the cake. There was always one candle more than the child’s age, signifying the light of life. The birthday boy had to blow out all the candles at once, making a wish, which would only come true if it was kept secret.
