How did the Mohawk hair style come about?

– What was the Punk Movement?

It emerged with the Mohawks, indigenous people of North America. In the 17th century, the tribe’s warriors were known to have all their hair shaved off, with the exception of a band in the middle of the head, which ran from the forehead to the nape of the neck – a symbol of bravery in the fight against white oppression. Between the 70s and 80s, the Mohawk style was adopted by the punk movement, introduced by Wattie Buchan, lead singer of The Exploited, who displayed spiky hair in his performances. For punks, both hairstyle and clothing were icons of difference and freedom, a struggle against the repressive government system. But what was once shocking has become popular – particularly among young people. Today, colorful Mohawks of different types are popular: on the streets, on television and even on the football fields.
