How was a ballad in the 2000s

A little bit of everything

At the turn of the millennium, nightlife could be defined in one word: variety. There were houses specialized in attending a type of public (black music, samba, indie, rock, pop, retro 90s, 80s…) to superballads that preferred to house all these genres at the same time, in different environments. were true “entertainment complexes”with dance floors, bars, restaurants and entertainment for all tastes.

Welcome

At this time, another “celebrity” of the night emerges: the hostess (“hostess”, in English). They are women (generally very beautiful) who receive the public at the door, controlling the entrance and managing the VIP or discount lists. If the process takes time, great: huge queues were deliberately provoked to give the impression that the place was pumping.

The basics that are expensive

The public dressed according to the style of the house. In the “superballads”, which used to be more expensive, brands such as Diesel, in jeans, reigned. But the looks were basic: guys in a T-shirt or shirt and carefully styled hair; girls in high heels, dresses and straight hair (long live the flat iron!). Sometimes, they opted for a more rock look (eye pencil everywhere) or a beach look.

Multiple choice

The superclubs looked like a mall, all sectioned off. Don’t like the electronic pile driver that’s playing? That’s ok: right in the next room there’s an axé. Or funk. Or radio hits. Did you hit that hunger? Run to the restaurant. Want a quieter chat? Take the girl or guy to one of the bars. The cuisine varied: there was Italian, Japanese and even Indian.

Where there is smoke…

The “bullet” (ecstasy) and the “sweet” (LSD) continued to be the fuel for late nights. But other drugs also appeared, such as special k (slang for ketamine, a tranquilizer used in horses – which, recently, began to be tested by doctors in the fight against depression).

The special k was mixed with drink, smoked or inhaled. And speaking of smoking, at the end of the decade, some cities tightened their grip on smoking, banning it indoors. It was the rise of smokehouses, open spaces exclusively for smokers.

drink to show off

The popular caipirinha (cachaça, lemon, sugar and ice) has gained variants with exotic fruits, such as lychee and Persian lime, or with other distillates, such as vodka and sake. In some houses, those who wanted to show off could order expensive bottles of champagne, delivered with a procession of waitresses and sparks, catching the attention of the crowd.

we are all paparazzi

The popularization of digital cameras turned anyone into a photographer and potential “celebrity”. The next day, everything ended up on Orkut or Fotolog, the social networks at the time. Showing the crowd how “amazing” your night had been became even easier and instantaneous at the end of the decade, when the internet on cell phones finally “caught”.

CURIOSITIES

In addition to the traditional pickup, where CDs or vinyls alternated, some DJs started to play music files directly from the laptop.

The internet boom has expanded the use of “VIP lists”, where you sign up via email to receive discounts.
