Many of the coaches working for clubs in Brazil are former players. However, passing through the lawns is not mandatory. “They say that those who haven’t played soccer don’t understand anything. In some cases it’s true, in others not”, says coach Fábio Cunha, who directs and organizes a soccer school in Piracicaba (SP). A graduate of the USP Sports course, Cunha is a good example of what you can do from school benches to the reserve bench. Here’s how to follow his trail.
TRAINING
Undergraduate and postgraduate: physical education and sport faculties are the most recommended. The Universidade Gama Filho, in Rio, offers a postgraduate course in “football and futsal learning and training methodology”. Information on the website https://www.centraldecursosugf.com.br
Other courses: there are courses outside colleges focused on sports training, such as those offered by the Associação Brasileira de Treinadores de Futebol (www.abtf.org.br/cursos.html)
What is learned: notions of sports psychology, technical and tactical fundamentals, physiology, physical preparation…
WORK
Occupation area: in 1st and 2nd grade schools as a football teacher, in sport-specific schools, in addition to amateur and professional clubs
Day to day: in a professional team, the work is in two periods, there is a lot of travel and rare weekends off
Market situation: the number of professionals is large, but so are the areas in which they can work. Much more difficult is to find space outside the country
What else is worth: travel, the opportunity to discover different cultures and places. In addition, it may be the path for those who like football, but do not want (or do not have the quality) to be a player.
Why think twice: the difficulty of keeping a job due to the pressure for results, the lack of structure, the low wages for the vast majority of professionals and the constant delay in payments
REMUNERATION
Initial salary: in São Paulo football, less than 1 thousand reais for those who start training teams from the 4th or 5th division
Possible salary after ten years:
at least 30 thousand reais if at that time the professional is already managing a team from the 1st division of the Brazilian Championship
