Why do dogs always have their mouths open?

They use their mouths to sweat and thus control their body temperature. Dogs are open-mouthed – panting and breathing fast – more often on hot days or after some physical exercise, such as a run. “Dogs do not have sweat glands (which produce sweat). Therefore, they effect heat loss through the tongue. Perspiration also occurs through the muzzle and the pads of the paws. However, as the snout is poorly irrigated and the pads are in constant contact with the ground, perspiration in these places occurs on a smaller scale”, says veterinarian José Bruno de Sousa, president of the Ceará Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine. With cats, who also don’t have sweat glands spread across the body, heat exchange happens in another way: through licking. In addition to keeping the animal clean, licking is an efficient method of temperature control in kittens.
