How did the expression «having the king in the belly» come about?

(Yasmin Ayumi/Weird World)

During the period of the Portuguese monarchy, one of the most celebrated news throughout the kingdom was that the king would have an heir to succeed him.

Therefore, when the queen became pregnant with the sovereign, she was treated more carefully by all the other people in the kingdom, as she was carrying a future prince or princess. The flattery was worth even if the baby in question was a bastard.

All that extra care made the lucky girl begin to feel more important than the others, precisely because she had a descendant of the king in her belly. Therefore, it was common for her to be seen as arrogant and stuck up in other people’s eyes.
