It’s all because of their flapping wings. “The buzzing is the result of the high frequency of the mosquitoes’ wings beating, which, depending on the species, can reach a thousand movements per second”, says entomologist (student of insects) Delsio Natal, from the University of São Paulo (USP). It’s like each insect is a micro fan. The blades of the device make noise when they move by displacing air, right? With insects, the same thing happens – the difference is that the noise is more acute because the number of wing movements per second is also greater. Anyone who thinks that “zzzz” that people hate so much is exclusive to mosquitoes such as mosquitoes is wrong: several other flying insects, such as bees, wasps and dragonflies, also cause buzzing when flying. “But as mosquitoes fly close to our faces in search of blood, the noise caused by their wings is easily heard”, says Delsio.
