To protect the hull, which is a sensitive region and, at the same time, very important for the locomotion of these animals. Horses step on the end of a single toe, protected by the hoof, which is nothing more than a very thick nail. In the past, when the habit of putting horseshoes on horses did not yet exist, the hoof ended up suffering great wear and tear and the animal was unfit for work, sport or leisure. It was around the 10th century that the custom of putting iron protection on horses arose. The horseshoe is held by a series of nails in the dead part of the hoof, therefore, the animal does not feel pain – but some care must be taken to ensure that its fixation is efficient. Nowadays, the accessory can be forged from various materials, such as steel, aluminum and other special metals. In addition to protection, the horseshoe increases the traction of the paws, serves to compensate for hoof formation defects and reduces gait irregularities.
